Recirculation of plasmasphere material during idealized magnetic storms

چکیده
The fate of flux tube material once it is eroded from the plasmasphere through a dayside plume remains unknown. can be either swept away by solar wind and lost Earth’s system, or recirculated into inner magnetosphere. Recirculating could plausibly enter central plasma sheet contribute to ring current. This work uses numerical models explore this possibility. Historically has been difficult question answer due fact that wind, ionosphere, plasmaspheric plasmas are all dominated hydrogen making distinguish source observation alone. Recent advances in computing have enabled us question. Using Space Weather Modeling Framework (SWMF) couple Block-Adaptive-Tree-Solar-Roe-Up-Wind-Scheme (BATS-R-US), Dynamic Global Core Plasma Model (DGCPM), Ridley Ionosphere (RIM), we track motion leaves self-consistent manner.

The size of the auroral belt during magnetic storms
Using the auroral boundary index derived from DMSP electron precipitation data and the Dst index, changes in the size of the auroral belt during magnetic storms are studied. It is found that the equatorward boundary of the belt at midnight expands equatorward, reaching its lowest latitude about one hour before Dst peaks. This time lag depends very little on storm intensity. It is also shown tha...
متن کاملPrediction of Magnetic Storms by Nonlinear
The strong correlation between magnetic storms and southward interplanetary magnetic eld (IMF) is well known from linear prediction lter studies using the Dst and IMF data. However, the linear lters change signiicantly from one storm to another and thus are limited in their predicting ability. Previous studies have indicated nonlinearity in the magneto-spheric response as the ring current decay...

1. This paper continues my discussion of the average characteristics of the field of geomagnetic disturbances or storms, given in two previous papers • which will be referred to as I and 2; the irregular part of magnetic disturbance is not considered. A condensed representation of the main average features of magnetic storms is given in 1 (pp. 61-72) and 2 (pp. 242-264), and evidence is describ...
متن کاملIonospheric redistribution during geomagnetic storms
[1]The abundance of plasma in the daytime ionosphere is often seen to grow greatly during geomagnetic storms. Recent reports suggest that the magnitude of the plasma density enhancement depends on the UT of storm onset. This possibility is investigated over a 7year period using global maps of ionospheric total electron content (TEC) produced at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The analysis confir...
متن کاملPlasmaspheric depletion and refilling associated with the September 25 , 1998 magnetic storm observed by ground magnetometers
The plasmaspheric mass density at was monitored by two IGPP/LANL ground magnetometer stations during the magnetic storm on September 25, 1998. Even at this low latitude the plasma density dropped significantly to of the pre-storm value. The total electron content (TEC) inferred by GPS signals also shows a sizable decrease during the storm. The observations suggest that the convection caused by ...
